What does the Highway of Holiness mean in Isaiah 35?
Isaiah 35 promises a road through the wilderness that the unclean cannot walk. What that highway is, who it is for, and what walking on it asks of a person today.
Isaiah 35 describes a remarkable road through the wilderness — a highway for the redeemed, where the unclean cannot walk. What does this Highway of Holiness mean for us today?
Isaiah 35 is a beautiful picture of God's restoration. The desert blossoms, the weak are strengthened, and God's redeemed people return to Zion with joy.
But in the middle of this promise, Isaiah describes something very important:
And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way.
Isaiah 35:8, NIV
The Bible does not simply speak about a destination. It speaks about a way of getting there.
And that way is called the Way of Holiness.
For the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness, this speaks directly to the call for the Church to return to repentance, holiness, obedience to God's Word, and preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ. The Ministry's statement of faith connects true repentance with the cleansing power of Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit.
What is the Highway of Holiness?
Isaiah describes a highway appearing in the wilderness and gives it a very specific name: the Way of Holiness.
Holiness means being set apart for God. It involves turning away from sin and choosing to live according to His Word.
This is why repentance is so closely connected to the Highway.
Repentance changes our direction. Holiness describes the way we now walk.
You cannot genuinely turn to God while deliberately holding on to the things He has told you to leave behind.
The Ministry of Repentance and Holiness therefore places repentance at the beginning of the Christian walk, followed by a life of holiness through the help of the Holy Spirit.
Who can walk on this highway?
Isaiah gives a clear warning:
It will be for those who walk on that Way; the unclean will not journey on it.
Isaiah 35:8, NIV
The message is simple.
The Highway of Holiness is not merely something we admire or talk about. It is a road we are expected to walk.
That means our relationship with God should affect the way we live.
It affects our words, our choices, our relationships, what we pursue, what we do in private, and how seriously we take God's commands.
Holiness is not about appearing religious before other people.
It is about belonging to God and living accordingly.
Is holiness only for certain people?
No.
The Highway of Holiness is not reserved for pastors, theologians, or people who seem spiritually impressive.
God calls ordinary people to repent, believe in Christ, and walk with Him.
The important question is not whether we know everything about the Bible.
The question is whether we are willing to follow the way God has shown us.
Jesus said:
If you love me, keep my commands.
John 14:15, NIV
Love for Christ and obedience cannot be separated.
What does the highway mean for Christians today?
A highway is something you walk on.
That gives us a powerful picture of the Christian life.
Holiness is not simply a statement we make once. It is a daily walk.
There will be decisions to make, temptations to resist, things to surrender, and areas where God calls us to change.
Hebrews says:
Make every effort… to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14, NIV
This is one reason the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness places such strong emphasis on holy living, and on what that verse actually requires. Its mission is centred on preparing the way for the glorious coming of the Messiah through repentance, holiness, and obedience to God's Word.
The Highway of Holiness is therefore not just about where we are going. It is about how we are living while we wait.
How do we walk in holiness?
Walking this highway begins with a genuine relationship with God, but it also becomes visible in everyday life.
Repent when you sin
Do not become comfortable with sin.
When God reveals something that needs to change, turn away from it and return to Him.
John the Baptist said:
Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
Matthew 3:8, NIV
Let God's Word guide you
Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Psalm 119:105, NIV
We cannot walk God's way while ignoring His Word.
Separate yourself from what leads you into sin
Sometimes holiness requires difficult choices.
If something continually draws you away from God, you may need to let it go.
Depend on the Holy Spirit
We do not become holy through human strength alone. The Holy Spirit works in us, helping us grow in obedience and become increasingly set apart for God.
Keep walking
If you stumble, do not give up.
Repent, rise again, and continue walking with Christ.
The danger is not simply stumbling.
The danger is becoming comfortable with the wrong road.
Why does this matter now?
The Highway of Holiness becomes especially meaningful when we consider the Ministry's message about preparing for the return of Jesus Christ.
The Ministry of Repentance and Holiness describes its mission as preparing the way for the coming Messiah and calling people back to repentance and holy living.
This makes the question personal:
If Jesus Christ returned today, would He find me walking in His way?
Jesus warned His followers to remain watchful because they do not know the day or hour of His coming (Matthew 24:42).
Preparation is therefore not something we postpone.
We prepare by how we live today.
The road is still before us
Isaiah 35 ends with a beautiful picture:
They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Isaiah 35:10, NIV
There is a destination.
There is a promise.
But there is also a way.
The Way of Holiness.
The message is therefore simple: repent, turn away from sin, obey God's Word, depend on the Holy Spirit, and keep walking with Christ.
This is the perspective that lies at the heart of the Ministry of Repentance and Holiness: a Church that has truly turned back to God must also learn to walk in holiness as it prepares for the coming of the Messiah.
The question is no longer simply, "What is the Highway of Holiness?"
The real question is: are you walking on it?
